MobileTechRoundup show #197; Buzz, Android, and mobile Office talk

February 12th, 2010 by

Google Buzz was the big tech news of the week so Kevin, James, and I kicked off MobileTechRoundup show #197 giving our thoughts and experiences with the new service. Kevin also talked about the Swype text input system on Android that is launching on the myTouch 3G. James received news that Skyfire bought the Steel browser for Android so we may soon see Skyfire moving from Windows Mobile and S60 to Android. Quickoffice also added a few web services for document support and Kevin was pretty pleased to hear this. I am very interested in seeing how well Quickoffice and Documents To Go look on the iPad in comparison to the iWork apps. Virtualization on the iPad was also discussed and may be swaying iPad purchase decisions.

MobileTechRoundup show #165, Nexus One, Pre Plus, and Overdrive

February 6th, 2010 by

Kevin and I both have Google Nexus One devices so were were quite happy to kick off MobileTechRoundup show #196 talking about our firmware update that brought multi-touch pinch and zoom to the Gallery and web browser. James and I also have the Palm Pre Plus (James has the Pixi Plus too) and we are not as excited about them as we thought we would be. James has been testing speeds compared to the MiFi and is seeing a huge difference between the two. I just went and picked up my own Sprint Overdrive today after taking an eval unit for a test drive. Firefox Mobile also arrived as a full version release and Kevin and I have been checking it out and offered some thoughts on our experiences.

MobileTechRoundup show #194, CES wrap-up, Nexus One, & N900

January 16th, 2010 by

James, Kevin, and I recently returned from CES 2010 in Vegas and kicked off MobileTechRoundup show #194 talking about some of our impressions of the show. I was quite pleased with CES this year, even though there wasn’t a ton of mobile phone news and stayed very busy. We all agreed that the Lenovo U1 hybrid stood out and caught our attention. Kevin and I both purchased a Google Nexus One while in Vegas and are overall quite happy with the device. We are also both rocking along with a Nokia N900 and the beta Ovi Store launch just took place after our CES return.

December 11th, 2009 by

We started off MobileTechRoundup show #192 with one of my favorite topics, Nokia. They posted their 2010 plan and I was able to recently share my experiences with their devices. James has an HD2 and Kevin has a Nokia N900 so we chatted about those experiences as well. Kevin also tested out the new super fast T-Mobile wireless data network and discovered the N900 supports it well. My nook also arrived and I offered up some initial thoughts.

MobileTechRoundup show #190; Should we call them Pocket PCs again?

November 25th, 2009 by

I spent a couple of days at the Microsoft Mobius event here in Seattle, but couldn’t share much of what was discussed on MobileTechRoundup show #190 due to NDA agreements. However, each attendee did receive an HTC HD2 from HTC so I shared a few thoughts about that device. As people try to figure out a good label for these latest generation smartphones Kevin brought up that we should go back to calling them Pocket PCs. James and I chatted about our pleasure with the Verizon Wireless MiFi and how useful of a tool that has become. Kevin also shared a new technology that he will be teting out soon in his local area. The Google Chrome OS was showed off this week and Kevin helped educate me about this latest “cloud” system.

Windows Mobile is better than you think

November 25th, 2009 by

Regular readers here know that I am a fan of the Windows Mobile operating system, even though that is not necessarily a popular opinion since it isn’t the flashiest and newest OS. I have talked about the strengths of Windows Mobile quite a bit and was pleased to see my friend and MoTR cohost, James Kendrick, post a fair comparison article between Android and Windows Mobile. James takes a look at multi-tasking, available apps, user interface, and computer desktop integration. It was refreshing to see James award the advantage to Windows Mobile in 3 of 4 areas with the last one being a tie.

November 7th, 2009 by admin

Today is the launch of the Motorola DROID and HTC DROID ERIS on Verizon and James has the DROID in hand. Kevin is triple booting his netbook and the new Moblin 2.1 OS looks slick enough for me to give a try on my MSI Wind soon too. We also chatted about the success of integrated smartphone platforms compared to licensed platforms.
